Shes only gone and done it again! I thought Id start with the most obvious one. Obviously, if youre looking for poetry books similar to milk and honey then you should read Rupi Kaurs other works.
If you were a big fan of milk & honey then youre going to love the sun and her flowers too. This book is divided into five chapters: wilting, falling, rooting, rising, blooming.
As always, I both wanted to devour every word of her poetry as quickly as possible but also savour each and every word of Rupis magic. She has this amazing way of putting feelings hidden in the depths of your very soul into words on paper.
Personally, I enjoyed the sun and her flowers even more than Rupi Kaurs debut because it included more passages about family and immigration, which resonate a little more with me. This collection made me take a good look at myself and reconsider things that affect my everyday relationships that had never crossed my mind before!
Love Her Wild By Atticus Poetry
Love Her Wild is the first collection of Instagram poetry I have ever read and it did not disappoint. Atticus Poetry, who has over half a million followers on Instagram, blew me away with his words and accompanying photography.
This almost works as a companion to Rupi Kaurs milk & honey as this poetry collection is in the same sort of vein, but we see through the male gaze instead.
This is well worth a read if youre reaching for another book after finishing both of Rupi Kaurs collections. If you only read one book on this list, make it this one.
Sometimes the right book finds you at the right time and in the right place. That was my first thought upon turning the last page of Sea of Strangers and putting the book down.
Leav writes about the lasting impact relationships have on us, even months, maybe years after they end.
Like Rupi Kaur, she explores the themes of love and loss, making the extraordinary intensity of emotion one experiences after loss a universal experience.
I recognised myself in the girl she describes and reading this collection made me feel less alone if thats not good poetry then what is?

Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur is a collection of poems twined around love, loss, trauma, healing, and femininity. The whole aesthetic of the book is as minimalist as its cover and the title. Each page tells a different story, and each story is short-spoken yet carried such powerful thoughts.
Although the poems are unlike the traditional lyrical poetry but the words make a lasting impact on the reader. A number of poems are written with such sugar-coated sadness that theyll knock you down.

The Poetry Pharmacy stands out from the other four collections Ive selected here because its the most traditional poetry collection. Its made up of the most famous and well-respected poetry pieces, both old and new, each with the aim of curing a specific ailment.
Whilst the others are deeply personal accounts that progress throughout the collection, this is a scattering of lots of different poets works. The reason that its like milk and honey is that reading this gives the impression that a warm hand has comes out of the page and taken yours. You start to feel understood.
As I said in my review, keep this on your bookshelf as you would keep paracetamol in your bathroom cupboard. You never know when youre going to need it but when you do itll be right there waiting for you.

There are lots of poetry books in a similar style to milk & honey these days but my first recommendation is Maya Angelous work from the twentieth century.
She was writing inspirational poetry long before Rupi Kaur was even born and Angelou passed away the year that milk and honey was published.
She was a phenomenal woman , part of the Civil Rights Movement in the XYZs and worked with Martin Luther King Junior and Malcolm X. Themes in Angelous poetry include abuse, isolation, feminism, racism and more.
The fact that Rupi Kaur has taken up the reins from Angelou in a modern age and is still shouting about these issues today tells a sad story about the progress that has been made over the past few decades.
Angelou was one of the absolute best female poets and I cant recommend her collections enough.

In Fierce Fairytales, Nikita Gill uses poetry to rewrite the classic fairytale stories we were all taught growing up.
Maybe Cinderellas stepmother had good reason to be such a bitter b*tch, maybe Sleeping Beauty wasnt waiting for a prince to come save her.
Nikita Gill forces you to look at these well-known tales through a fresh pair of eyes and its an important reminder that things are not always as they seem.
The main theme of this collection is female empowerment and its an important read for those who have ever wanted to rewrite their own story or be something different from what everyone expects.
There are a few pieces of poetry and prose in this collection that didnt quite fit in with the fairytale theme and also didnt do much for me, which was disappointing. However, on the whole, this was a thoroughly refreshing read that I would highly recommend to all women.

Depression & Other Magic Tricks
Depression & Other Magic Tricks is probably the most experimental collection of poetry out of these 5 options and youll find just as much spacebar poetry as you will prose.
Interestingly, the poet, Benhaim, is a performance poet and this is reflected in this written collection. In fact, you can almost her reciting these out loud to you in you head.
This collection also gives a much more focused view of mental health, particularly from the female perspective.
There were lots of moments in this book where I wanted to scream YES! because Benaim had perfectly articulated thoughts and feelings I have experienced. Its centred in daily life so its very relatable and Im sure Ill be coming back to this one again.
Odes To Common Things By Pablo Neruda Ken Krabbenhoft Ferris Cook
Maybe you need a break from these overly personal, autobiographical books like milk and honey. Let me introduce you to Odes to Common Things, a lovely collection of poems about everyday objects like tables and oranges and soap.
The Princess Saves Herself in This One is the most reminiscent of milk and honey. Short and potent. Amanda Lovelace is a poet to watch.

Whats interesting is that Shraya articulates the position of minorities but also explores the difficulties of speaking openly about racism when you have white privilege.
He addresses the conundrum of how to approach the topic of racism when you yourself have not experienced it first hand.
Its one of those topics where whatever you say will be criticised and Shrayas observations will no doubt resonate with white readers.
I loved the concept behind this collection and the meaning conveyed by Shrayas poetry though I feel execution let this book down a little. I wasnt enamoured with the form or layout but its a very thought-provoking and important read that I would recommend.

Following a three-month writing trip in California, and in the same year as her induction into the Brampton Arts Walk of Fame, Kaur’s second book, The Sun and Her Flowers, was published, on 3 October 2017. She views it as a “one long continuous poem that goes on for 250 pages”, “which while birthed in Instagram, is a concept that depends on being bound”. As of 2020, the book has sold upwards of a million copies and has been translated into multiple languages. In 2018, she made nearly $1.4 million from poetry sales. That same year, she performed at the Jaipur Literary Festival: “It was as if I had waited my whole life for this moment. It was my only show, where I wasn’t nervous. The crowd was energetic.”
While touring the world, she experienced feelings of depression and anxiety. The process of creating The Sun and Her Flowers and trying to replicate her success affected her mental health, reporting “furious 12-hour stretches” and 72-hour migraines. She experienced months of writer’s block and frustration at her work, ultimately calling its creation the “greatest challenge of my life”. Following its release, she dealt with feelings of burnout writing the poem “Timeless” in response. These feelings began to subside as she viewed them as transient aided by Elizabeth Gilbert‘s Big Magic, which she said “saved my life”. By early 2019, she entered therapy to ease her depression and anxiety.
Powerful Poetry Books Like Milk And Honey By Rupi Kaur
The poetry coming out right now is a different breed of poetry. Often when we hear the word, we picture the literary greatsCummings, Dickinson, Plath, Sexton, Whitman, Wordworth, Yeatsbut theres a barrier. Their work is complex and nuanced and, sometimes, labyrinthine. We need something more accessible. Something shorter, punchier. Something that maybe has tiny illustrations along with the words. And so we have more books like milk and honey by Rupi Kaur.
Rupi Kaur didnt necessarily start a trend and revival of poetry, but it sure feels that way. Perhaps shes just the first one to take off and sell gazillions of books. Either way, Im not complaining. We get the fruit of her labor, and the fruit of the labor she inspired.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, and while compiling this, I found more and more to add to my to-read list. The beauty of many books like milk and honey is how slim the volumes are. And beautiful, of course.

Alicia Cook put together a little mixtape of poetry about the human condition and life and love and loss. The first part is the poems, while the second part is blackout versions of those poems. Fun!
Cook is also an activist who speaks and writes often about addiction and its effects on families. Shes donated 100 percent of royalties from this collection to the Willow Tree Center, an addiction counseling center in New Jersey.

She Must Be Mad By Charly Cox
Written by a millennial for millennials, She Must Be Mad by Charly Cox will resonate with other young women trying to figure out how to adult in todays world. Cox uses a mix of prose and poetry to share her experiences growing up and the troubles she had with body image, mental health, relationships and more.
Its the beginnings of a journey of self-discovery but at times it does read like a personal diary that was written more for Coxs benefit than anyone elses. Theres no moment of clarity or development and she doesnt offer readers a way forward or a light at the end of the tunnel, but instead a nod of solidarity. Read this to know that you are not alone in your young struggles.
Charly Cox is a very young author, only twenty-two when this was published, but she was named as one of ELLE magazines 20 power players to watch out for in 2018 so watch this space.

The Princess Saves Herself In This One By Amanda Lovelace
the princess saves herself in this one is the most similar to milk and honey as it draws on her work in terms of style, content and even cover art. Its even published by the same people! Something to note though is that the target audience of this book seems to be considerably younger than that of Rupi Kaur, which does change the tone.
This collection is a little like marmite and people seem to either love or hate it. All in all, I think some sections are very poetic, others a bit style over substance. On balance, the princess saves herself in this one is still well worth a read if youre interested in exploring modern poetry. It was named Goodreads Poetry Choice Award 2016 so clearly, in the end, its champions defeated its critics. It was followed up with the witch doesnt burn in this one in 2018.

Prior to purchasing and reading milk and honey, I had heard a plethora of positive things about this book from friends of mine.
That book ripped me to shreds.
It depressed me.
Okay, so maybe not the most positive things, but allow me to give more context about their words. milk and honey ripped my friends to shreds and aided in piecing their broken hearts together. It depressed them but allowed reflection and light to enter their spirit in a time of healing.
The format of the first book I reviewed truths. and freedom. was similar to milk and honey. I loved that book so much I knew I had to read the work that has crowned its author the Queen of Instapoetry.
Self-published by Kaur in 2014 during her time at the University of Waterloo, milk and honey is a collection of poetry split into four chapters containing works straight from her heart.
Hell, just the fact that Kaur self-published her own book while attending university makes me question everything I did during my time in college . The accomplishment on its own is worth more than a $100,000 piece of paper.
What is beautiful about this book is that it showcases the power of words. Kaur is straight to the point with her poetry. It doesnt take her long-winded stanzas and an elite vocabulary to rip your spirit to bits. Her emotions flowingly pour on to the pages in the forms of gems and as you turn each page, each jewel hits you. Cutting deeper into your core.
This should have been my first warning.
