As youre planning out your holiday menu this is the first question that always comes to mind. And as I always say, its better to have too much than too little! But to give you a general idea, youll need about ½ pound of ham per person.
For this recipe, Im using a bone-in ham thats about 8 to 10 pounds. So this will comfortably make 12 servings, with a good amount of leftovers. And you know I love leftovers!
Cook Ham In The Slow Cooker
Our favorite way to heat ham is in the slow cooker. It frees up the oven and helps to keep that ham moist and juicy.
To heat the ham in the slow cooker, place the unwrapped ham in the slow cooker, then pour a cup or two of water in the bottom of the slow cooker. Drizzle the honey over the ham, cover and cook on low for 2-3 hours or until the ham is heated through.

How Long Does It Take To Cook A Honey Baked Ham
Bake your ham 20 minutes per each pound of ham meat or until a meat thermometer registers 140 degrees F when inserted into the thickest part of the ham. So for a 6 pound ham youll need 2 hours of baking time total. Keep in mind that although the ham is already fully cooked, enough time is needed to warm up the center.
Tips For The Perfect Ham

- I prefer to make this recipe with a bone-in spiral cut ham. You can also use a bone-in half shank, and score the top in a diamond pattern to let the glaze soak in. Another option is a boneless ham, but this cut is more likely to dry out which is why I always choose bone-in.
- I typically use light brown sugar and clover honey for the glaze. You can use dark brown sugar for a stronger flavor. Other honey varieties will also work, such as blackberry, buckwheat, orange blossom or wildflower.
- I recommend preparing the glaze just before you use it. The glaze will harden in the fridge if you try to make it in advance. If your glaze thickens up more than youd like, you can microwave it for about 30 seconds to loosen it back up again.

For this honey baked ham, youre going to use butter, honey and a hint of brown sugar. The acid of the pineapple juice balances out the sweetness from the honey, while the saltiness in the ham provides another layer of flavour.
From here you can add in spices like the traditional ground cinnamon. I dont normally add whole cloves to the outside of our ham, but for this recipe they work.

Start by rubbing the ham with a butter and honey mixture, then wrapping the dish in aluminum foil, and heating it in the oven until its warmed through. Next, youll pat it with a sugar and spice mixture and bake it on a higher temperature for 10 minutes. Finally, youll glaze it with our homemade glaze and broil it for a couple of minutes.
Its important to buy a fully cooked ham for this recipe, and I recommend buying a pre-sliced one if you can. The cooking instructions in the recipe card only apply to reheating a pre-cooked ham, and buying a spiral cut ham makes it so much easier to fully flavor the ham with the glaze .

Sugar Topping For Ham
The main ingredient in sugar topping for ham iswellsugar! You can do any ratio of white sugar to brown sugar that youd like, but we prefer a little more brown sugar. That molasses flavor in brown sugar is unbeatable.
To the sugar youll add a touch of different spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, paprika, ginger and onion powder. You wont need much of these spices at all. Just a touch will give you the flavor youre looking for.
Pat the sugar mixture all over the outside of the ham. You can separate the slice slightly and allow some of the sugar to fall down between the slices.
How To Make Slow Cooker Honey Baked Ham:

Spray a 6-quart slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray and place a cooked, spiral cut ham inside. Its okay if it doesnt fit perfectly inside the slow cooker, I will show you what you can do if that is the case.
Pour 1/3 cup water around the sides of the ham. It will drain into the bottom of the slow cooker.
In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup honey, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon.
Cook, stirring constantly, for 2-5 minutes on the stovetop until the sugar is dissolved then pour over the top of the ham in the slow cooker.
At this point, if your ham fits nicely in your slow cooker you can place the lid on top and set the timer.
If the top of your ham is sticking out of your slow cooker, simply use some sheets of foil and create a tent to hold in the heat around the sides of the ham then pinching closed at the top.
Place a thick, clean cloth on top of the foil tent to hold in the heat and then place the slow cooker lid on top.
Cook on low for 2-4 hours or until heated through. Most spiral sliced hams are already cooked, the ham is cooked through completely, so you are just trying to heat it through and let the glaze to thicken.
If your ham is not precooked, it will take about 4-6 hours to cook.
When the ham is done cooking, pour the drippings in the bottom of the slow cooker through a strainer and into a saucepan on the stove top.
Slice ham and serve with gravy on the side.
